JCP chair stresses 'one-China policy' and disagrees with Lee's Japan visit

Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo has announced his disagreement with the issuance of a visa to Lee Teng-hui, Taiwan's former president.

At a news conference on April 12, Shii said that Japan must stick to the "one- China policy" as the most important principle governing relations between Japan and China. Japan must not create an adverse current, he added.

Pointing out that Lee, former President of Taiwan, is still a politician and public figure, the JCP chair said he cannot agree with approving Lee's entry.

As reason for his plan to visit Japan, Lee Teng-hui has cited a heart check-up, but Shii quoted Taiwan's local newspaper as reporting that his plan is now proceeding without consulting his doctor, Shii said that health problem in this case cannot be used as the reason. (end)
