JCP in local elections got twice as many votes as it gained in July House of
Councilors election

In September 2 local assembly elections in seven municipalities, nine
Japanese Communist Party candidates were elected, up two seats from previous
elections.

In these elections, the JCP's voting strength increased 50 to 130 percent
compared with the July 29 House of Councilors election.

In the by-election in Fujimi Village in Gunma Prefecture to fill a
vacancy in the village assembly, the JCP failed to win the seat but its
votes were 4.5 times what it got in the House of Councilors election.

In Hiraga Town in Akita Prefecture, the JCP won a seat in the town
assembly for the first time in eight years. (end)
