Construction and transport workers' union holds annual congress

The All Japan Construction, Transport and General Worker's Union (Kenkoro) held 4th regular congress in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture from August 24 to 26.

The congress adopted an action program calling for reasonable rates for trucking services, democratization of public works projects, and solving the unemployment problem.

70,000 Kenkoro members are employees of large companies related to the transport industry, including Japan Railway Co., major general contractor construction companies and trucking companies, small- and medium-sized company employees, individual construction workers, truck drivers and others.

In the discussion, a dump truck driver from Akita Prefecture said that he and other union members took part in union activity without leaving it to the leaders alone and successfully got jobs as part of a public works project.

A construction company employee from Tokyo said that as outrageous restructuring is carried out in his company, employees at managerial positions have joined the union.

Sakata Shinsaku, newly elected union chair, called on the participants to increase Kenkoro membership to 100,000. (end)
