Nagasaki's high school students call for end to 'terrorism and war'

Sixty high school students of Nagasaki Prefecture on September 10 sent a message calling for "an end to terrorism and war" to world leaders, including those of the United States, Britain, and Russia.

It stated that many children fell victim to terrorism and war, and that the 21st century should be without wars.

Their appeal is based on the strong conviction of the atomic-bombed prefectural people that there should be no war for whatever reason. They belong to an organizing committee of highschool students devoted to collecting 10,000 signatures for the elimination of nuclear weapons. They sent 150 copies to young people they have come to know in the Netherlands and South Korea.

The committee was set up last year. Just after they collected 10,000 signatures for eliminating nuclear weapons, the September 11 terrorist attack occurred. A student said, "That made us recognize that the world is not peaceful. Unless we act, nothing will change. The action is a test of our will for peace." (end)
