Hiroshima Mayor Akiba reelected, defeating LDP-Komei challenger

Hiroshima City Mayor Akiba Tadatoshi was reelected for his second term on February 2, defeating Ota Susumu recommended by the Liberal Democratic Party and supported by the Komei Party. Akiba received 183,078 votes, or 46.53 percent of votes cast.

The Japanese Communist Party did not put up a candidate of its own for the mayoral election, thinking that Akiba's reelection will help stop LDP politics from undermining the city administration and that the JCP will work to influence and enhance the mayor's policies. (end)
