U.S. touch-and-go relocation plan rejected by local assembly

The Okimi Town Assembly in Hiroshima Prefecture on February 3 rejected its mayor's plan to host U.S. Navy touch-and-go drills on Okurokami Island, the town's uninhabited island.

Withdrawing its decision to visit the U.S. Atsugi Naval Air Station, which is currently used for night landing practices by U.S. Navy aircraft, the assembly decided that it will no longer hold discussions on this issue.

Following Mayor Tanimoto Hidekazu's announcement that the town may provide the island for NLPs, Hiroshima governor and neighboring municipalities expressed their opposition to Tanimoto, and local residents' protests against him are increasing. (end)
