Korean Hibakusha wins government's allowance

The Fukuoka High Court on February 7 upheld a lower court decision and ordered the government to pay a South Korean atomic-bomb survivor (Hibakusha) the health care allowance for Hibakusha.

75 year-old Lee Kanyon, a-bombed in Nagasaki in 1945, has insisted that it was wrong for the government and Nagasaki City to have stopped paying him the Hibakusha health care allowance which he had received based on the Hibakusha Aid Law when he returned to South Korea.

Last December, the Osaka High Court ruled that Osaka Prefecture should continue paying the allowance to South Korean Hibakusha Kwak Kwi after he returned to his country (see past edition 2002 December 4-10). (end)
