Japan P.E.N. Club opposes military attack on Iraq

The Japan P.E.N. Club on March 17 published a statement protesting the U.S.-British decision to attack Iraq without a new UNSC resolution.

The statement said, "This war is extraordinary because it's in violation of international law and is not authorized by a UNSC resolution. The Japan P.E.N. Club embraces a constitution rejecting the use of force as a means of solving international disputes and opposes all forms of military action."

It demanded that the Koizumi Cabinet stop uncritically following the two countries and recall the Aegis ship from the Indian Ocean.

The Club has sent copies of the statement to Prime Minister Koizumi and the U.S. and Britain embassies in Tokyo. (end)
