SDF to refuel for occupation forces in Iraq

Under the proposed new law, ostensibly to help Iraq's reconstruction, the Self-Defense Forces will undertake refueling for the U.S.-British forces occupying Iraq and help clean up remnants of the former Saddam Hussein government, a senior government official said.

The special measures law on Japan's 'assistance' for "Iraqi reconstruction" is aimed at dispatching SDF units to support and take part in the U.S.-British occupation of Iraq.

On the grounds that the need is "for Japan to support the occupation assuring the security of Iraq," the Iraq bill cites medical care, transportation and custody of supplies, communication, repair, and supplies as what the Japanese Self-Defense Forces would do.

As part of activities to deliver supplies to Iraq, the government plans to supply oil in the same way as Maritime SDF ships have been doing in the Indian Ocean under the 2001 Anti-Terrorism Special Measures Law.

As for 'transportation', the Air SDF will send C130 transport aircraft to Iraq to carry occupation forces' personnel and material.

The Defense Agency plans to survey countries near Iraq to establish stepping stones for transporting supplies to Iraq.

It also plans to use ASDF aircraft to transport wounded soldiers of the occupation forces. Dispatching Maritime SDF ships for this purpose, if necessary, is also being examined.

Akahata of June 19 stressed that military assistance in combat violates the Constitution which bans the use of force. (end)
