Hibakusha receive IPB peace prize

The Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bombs Sufferers Organizations (Japan Hidankyo) on August 8 received the 2003 Sean MacBride Peace Prize from the International Peace Bureau (IPB).

At an award ceremony held in Nagasaki City, IPB Vice-president Rae Street handed a silver medal to Yamaguchi Senji, representative of Japan Hidankyo.

Referring to MacBride's long contribution to the struggle calling for a ban on the use of nuclear weapons, Street stressed how significant it is to award this prize to A-bomb survivors (Hibakusha) at a time when the United States has a plan for the possible use of nuclear weapons.

Established in 1982, the IPB received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1910. (end)
