Zushi assembly unanimously rejects new housing for U.S. soldiers

The Zushi City Assembly on August 7 adopted a unanimous resolution opposing the plan to construct additional housing units for U.S. Navy personnel in the Ikego district which encompasses parts of Zushi and Yokohama cities in Kanagawa Prefecture.

The Japanese government and the U.S. Forces in Japan recently agreed that four former locations of U.S. base facilities in Yokohama City will be returned to Japan and that 800 additional housing units will be constructed for families of U.S. forces to live in.

The resolution pointed out that the construction plan reneges on the 1994 agreement between the Japanese government, Kanagawa Prefecture, and Zushi City that no additional housing units will be constructed at Ikego. (end)
