Workers of Chubu Electric Power get 930 million yen in back pay for overtime

Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. on September 19 paid a total of 930 million yen to about 6,500 workers in back pay for overtime work which had been done from January to June of this year.

The workers who received the back pay account for 40 percent of the company's workforce, excluding managers. Their average hours of unpaid overtime for the six months was 54 hours.

After being inspected by the local Labor Standards Inspection Office in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, Chubu Electric Power started investigating its workers' claims of unpaid overtime work. The company plans to finish paying workers by the end of this year for overtime work since April 2001.

A worker, who has many times requested the Labor Standards Inspection Office to advise Chubu Electric Power to end unpaid overtime work, said, "I have started receiving positive responses at the office since the Japanese Communist Party brought up the issue of unpaid overtime work in the Diet."
