Communist mayor fulfills his promises

A newly-elected communist mayor wasted no time in moving his town assembly to fulfill pledges he made during the election campaign.

Katayama Hitoshi, mayor of Konko Town in Okayama Prefecture in western Japan, is the 11th communist mayor in Japan, elected in April.

The Konko Town Assembly on September 24 adopted the revised ordinance to raise the upper limit of coverage of free medical treatment to ten years of age from the present six.

The townspeople have already been able to use free-of-charge their public hall since September 1.

A 30-percent cut in the mayor's salary is also on the agenda. (end)
