JCP's effort helps engineering company workers get back pay for overtime work

A Yokohama-based chemical engineering and construction company has announced that it will make a payment for overtime worked by its employees since last April.

Chiyoda Corporation announced the decision on October 20, which was made possible by the efforts by Japanese Communist Party led by Omori Takeshi, JCP member of House of Representatives at the time. Omori and other JCP members pressed the local Labor Standards Inspection Office to carry out investigation and guidance.

Chiyoda makes it a rule for general workers to enter the number of hours they worked overtime on the computer, but the maximum payment for their overtime is set at 45 hours a month.

The Labor Standards Inspection Office investigated the company in September at the request of Omori and ordered the company to take corrective steps after finding that Chiyoda had forced workers to work overtime without pay.

Workers can now apply for overtime pay for the period between April and September.

A member of the JCP branch at Chiyoda said, "The next task is to win overtime pay for those in nominal managerial positions." (end)
