Citizens' campaign for DU abolition starts

A citizens' group was established in Tokyo on February 13 to promote a movement for the abolition of depleted uranium bombs.

Representatives of the "Abolish DU Campaign - Tokyo" held a press conference on the same day and called for more citizens' participation. Photo journalist Morizumi Takashi, who continues covering the effects of the war in Iraq, and Aoyama Gakuin University Professor Niikura Osamu were among the ten representatives.

The organization will carry out activities to raise public awareness of how dangerous DU munitions are, establish an international treaty for their abolition, and support DU victims.

Ito Kazuko, a lawyer and one of the representatives said, "We will start our campaign as responsible citizens who are aware of the danger of DU bombs." (end)
