A call for 2004 World Conference against A & H Bombs issued

The Organizing Committee for the World Conference against A and H Bombs at its general meeting on February 18 in Tokyo decided to put great energy in the effort to increase calls for the abolition of nuclear weapons from the grass roots, including the on-going signature collection in preparation for the 2004 World Conference against A and H Bombs to be held in August in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The Committee also stressed the importance of winning more support from mayors and local assembly chairs and making the 2004 Peace March much easier for everyone to feel free to participate in.

In the keynote speech, Takakusagi Hiroshi, secretary general of the Japan Council against A and H Bombs (Japan Gensuikyo), defined the 2004 World Conference as a milestone in the movement to achieve a world without nuclear weapons and called for greater cooperation with the world anti-war movements. He said this yearŐs World Conference is an important conference in the runner-up to the 2005 NPT Review Conference.

The Organizing Committee also called for success in the March 1st Bikini Day events. An appeal adopted at the end of the general meeting called for the largest possible participation in and support for the 2004 World Conference. (end)
