High school students hold nationwide peace rally

On March 21 in Tokyo, about 800 high school students, holding colorful banners and balloons, held an anti-war rally to express their determination to jointly work for building a peaceful world in the 21st century.

This was the third nationwide peace rally organized by high school students at Miyashita Park in Tokyo.

Gathering from Hokkaido to Okinawa, the participants reported on various peace actions they have been conducting in their towns.

Young activists from Gunma Prefecture talked about their campaign to send foreign embassies a letter expressing their opposition to war. This activity brought them opportunities to talk to representatives of German, Russian, Angolan, and Pakistani embassies.

After adopting an appeal in opposition to the U.S. war and occupation as well as the dispatch of Japan's Self-Defense Forces to Iraq, the participants marched in demonstration through downtown Shibuya, Tokyo's most popular district for young people. (end)
