Mexican and Egyptian officials to attend 2004 World Conference

The Organizing Committee of the 2004 World Conference against A & H Bombs on June 17 announced a list of overseas delegates to the World Conference and a tentative program of events which will be held in Hiroshima and Nagasaki August 2-9.

This year's World Conference will discuss the tasks and outlook of the anti-nuclear weapons movement with government officials and NGO representatives from around the world in preparation for the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty Review Conference as well as the next year's 60th anniversary of the A-bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The World Conference will be attended by many international delegates and guests, including Luis Alfonso de Alba, permanent representative of Mexico to the United Nations and Mohamed Ess El Din, assistant minister of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral Relations of Egypt. Several ambassadors to Japan and a representative of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) are also expected to join grassroots anti-nuclear weapon activists.

The main theme will be "Abolition of nuclear weapons now! Let there be no more Hiroshimas and no more Nagasakis" and the sub-themes will be "Building up momentum for the abolition of nuclear weapons towards the 60th year of the atomic suffering"; "End to the war of aggression and military occupation in Iraq. Respect for the rules of peace in the U.N. Charter and defense of Japan's peace Constitution"; and "Let us work in solidarity with the Hibakusha and nuclear victims in the world."

The International Conference will be held in Hiroshima August 2-4, the World Conference-Hiroshima August 4-6, and the World Conference-Nagasaki August 8-9. (end)
