Nearly half of college graduates are without job

An Education Ministry survey found that in Japan only 55.8 percent of university graduates and 16.9 percent of high school graduates could find a job this year.

It also shows that about 20 percent of college graduates neither advanced to higher education nor got a job.

Hayashi Mantaro, representative of the liaison council for job opportunities and work rules for young people, pointed out that although their employment rates have increased slightly over last year, it was only due to the increase in the number of workers in unstable employment, including temporary workers.

Hayashi stressed that major companies must hire more young people as a social responsibility, and that the government should take drastic measures to increase job opportunities for them. (end)
