Gensuikyo in New York calls on Britain and Malaysia to support nuclear weapons abolition

The Japan Council against A and H Bombs (Gensuikyo) delegation to the United Nations on October 11 visited British and Malaysian representatives to call for their efforts toward nuclear weapons abolition.

With the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference in May 2005 in mind, the delegation called on the U.N. member states to work to abolish nuclear weapons and give up the policy of nuclear deterrence.

The British representative stressed the need to comply with the non-proliferation regime at the coming review conference, but justified the British nuclear arsenal as a needed deterrent. The Gensuikyo delegation urged the nuclear weapons state to carry out its "unequivocal undertaking" to eliminate nuclear weapons.

Criticizing the nuclear weapons states for their exclusive focus on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, the Malaysian representative, chair of the Non-Aligned Movement, said that the essential task is to eliminate the existing nuclear weapons, and that Malaysia and the Non-aligned Movement support this aim.
