JCP Shii on U.S. presidential election result

Japanese Communist Party Executive Committee Chair Shii Kazuo on November 4 published a statement on the result of the U.S. presidential election. The text is as follows:

President George W. Bush was reelected in the U.S. presidential election on November 2. It is important to note that the election campaign has revealed a major division in the people's judgment over the United States starting the war against Iraq. Testimony by U.S. government officials have already made it clear that the Iraq War was an illegal war launched without proper cause. The election result cannot conceal this fact.

The lawless war and occupation has turned the Iraq situation from bad to worse, continually providing terrorists with the pretext for their activities. In order to constructively end this situation, it is essential for the United States to return to the international order based on international justice and the United Nations Charter, and to rethink its Iraq policy to change it into one helping the Iraqi people to recover their sovereign rights.

The Japanese Communist Party will make independent efforts to help Iraq in its nation-building under the U.N.-framework that would allow the Iraqis to play a key role. The JCP also calls on the second Bush administration to move to drastically change its Iraq policy. (end)
