Hibakusha to hold A-bomb exhibition at U.N. headquarters during NPT conference

Japan Confederation of A & H Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Japan Hidankyo) has announced that it will hold the "A-bomb Exhibition" at the U.N. headquarters during the NPT Review Conference in May.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki cities will co-sponsor the exhibition.

At a press conference in Tokyo on February 9, Japan Hidankyo Secretary General Tanaka Terumi stated that the exhibition will take place from May 2 to 27 at the visitors' entrance hall and the basement of the U.N. headquarters for viewing by state representatives, NGO staff, and visitors.

Tanaka said that Japan Hidankyo hopes that exhibiting the extant of the long-term sufferings of atomic bomb survivors (Hibakusha) will help the world's people understand the inhumanity of nuclear weapons and Hibakusha's wish for their abolition.

The exhibition will include photos showing A-bomb damages, and personal belongings left behind by Hibakusha who died in Hiroshima and Nagasaki (which are permanently exhibited in A-bomb museums in these cities) as well as Hibakusha's testimonies.

Tanaka said, "This is what the Japanese government ought to be doing," while expressing his pleasure to be able to hold such exhibition at the U.N. (end)
