JCP Shii attends receptions marking victory over fascism

Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on May 9 attended two receptions associated with Europe's victory over German fascism.

EU reception

Shii attended a Europe Day reception held by the Delegation of the European Union (EU) in Tokyo to commemorate victory over fascism and the creation of what is now known as the European Union.

In a brief meeting with Ambassador Bernhard Zepter, head of the Delegation of the European Commission in Japan, Shii stated, "The reconciliation between Germany and France, the basis of the EU today, was realized based on Germany's thorough reflection on its war of aggression. It is a significant lesson of history." Zepter agreed with Shii and said, "That's right. That was important."

Russian reception

On the same day, Shii attended a reception at the Russian Embassy commemorating the victory over German fascism.

Meeting with Russian Ambassador to Japan Alexander Losyukov, Shii said that he appreciates the roles played by Russian citizens in defeating German fascism. The ambassador thanked Shii for the words.

At both receptions, Shii talked with other participants about the significance of U.N.-led efforts to establish a world order for peace.

He also stressed that Japan must fulfill its responsibility in East Asia as Germany seeks reconciliation with the countries it invaded in the past by making apologies and self-reflection. - Akahata May 10, 2005
