U.S. NLP at Atsugi continues in spite of protests

In complete disregard of protests from the prefecrural and seven local governments as well as peace and democratic organizations, including the Japanese Communist Party, the U.S. Forces conducted night landing practice (NLP) at the U.S. Atsugi Naval Air Facility in Kanagawa Prefecrure on May 18.

At around 6p.m., C-2Greyhound carrier onboard delivery transport and FA-18C Hornet fighter aircraft from by Yokosuka-based U.S. carrier Kitty-Hawk began touch-and goes with roaring noise pollution. E-2C Hawkeye airborne early warning aircraft also took part in the practice.

Peace activists, including Omori Takeshi, former JCP member of the House of Representatives, and Hatano Kimie, former JCP member of the House of Councilors, staged a protest near the north end of the runway, shouting, "Give our quiet nights back!" - Akahata, May 19, 2005
