No NLP wanted in Iwakuni City

The Iwakuni City Assembly in Yamaguchi Prefecture on June 23 unanimously adopted a resolution in opposition to the plan to relocate a function of the U.S. Atsugi Naval Air Station in Kanagawa Prefecture to the U.S. Marine Corps Iwakuni Air Station in the city.

The resolution argues that local people have long suffered from damages caused by the Iwakuni base such as noise pollution and danger of aircraft accidents, and that they will no longer accept further strengthening and expansion of the base. It calls on the government not to continue with the relocation idea.

The plan to relocate the carrier-borne aircraft unit from the U.S. Atsugi base to the sea off Iwakuni City and conduct night-landing practices (NLPs) at a new runway there recently surfaced. This idea, however, completely contradicts Iwakuni City's comprehensive development program. - Akahata, June, 24, 2005
