International conference will be held for no more Hiroshimas or Nagasakis

An international meeting will be held in Tokyo from July 29-31 to discuss the damage and after-effects of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and their criminal nature on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the historic tragedy.

Various Japanese organizations and individuals are participating in the organizing committee of the International Citizens' Conference for No More Hiroshimas & Nagasakis, including the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Hidankyo), Japan Council against A & H Bombs (Gensuikyo), Japan Congress against A- and H-Bombs (Gensuikin), Hiroshima City Mayor Akiba Tadatoshi, and Nagasaki City Mayor Ito Iccho.

The conference has four main themes: analyzing the damage of Hiroshima and Nagasaki from the A-bombings; criminality of nuclear weapons; demands and rights of the Hibakusha; preserving the memories of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki tragedies.

A session under the first theme, "analyzing the damage of the A-bombings," is scheduled for July 30. A doctor who has treated Hibakusha, Hida Shuntaro, will be one of the speakers.

It will followed by a plenary session on the "criminality of nuclear weapons." Keynote speakers will include Christopher Weeramantory, former vice-president of the International Court of Justice.

Kwak Kifun, the president of the Korean A-Bomb Victims Association, will deliver a speech at a workshop focusing on "demands and rights of Hibakusha."

The fourth theme "Preserving the memories of Hiroshima and Nagasaki" will be discussed in three different workshops concerning the issues of peace education, dialog and exchange, and media.
