Naha City Assembly to be elected on July 10

A Naha City Assembly election in Okinawa will be announced on July 3 for the voting to take place on July 10.

For the assembly of the capital city of Okinawa Prefecture, hosting the largest number of U.S. military bases in Japan, 55 candidates will contest 44 seats. The Japanese Communist Party, the biggest opposition party, is running 6 candidates to maintain its present seats.

During five years under the city administration of the Liberal Democratic-Komei government, social services initiatives of the preceding progressive administration were either abolished or curtailed,totaling over 463 items.

Instead, Mayor Onaga allowed 9.6 billion to be used to develop port facilities without prospects for a substantial increase in foreign cargo freight. The Social Democratic and Social Mass parties are also in favor of the wasteful public works project.

As regards the question of U.S. bases by the JCP is the only party that is clearly opposed to strengthening the U.S. bases, relocating them within or outside the prefecture. Akahata July 2, 2005
