We condemn crime of terror attacks
Akahata editorial (excerpts)

In the nearly simultaneous terror attacks in London, at least 50 people were killed and 700 injured.

The British authorities claim that the international terrorist group Al-Qaida may have been involved in the attacks.

It stands to reason that the British government must do its utmost to identify the perpetrators of the crimes and have them stand trial.

At the same time, it is also necessary for the international community to heighten public awareness of the need to increase cooperation to thwart terror attacks and help isolate those who seek to resort to terrorist attacks.

Government leaders of the world, including the Arab countries, are denouncing the terror attacks in London.

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan severely condemned them as attacks against humanity.

The Group of Eight summit meeting in Britain, joined by leaders of Brazil, China, India, Mexico, and South Africa, published a statement condemning these brutal attacks.

The U.N. Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution severely condemning the terror attack in London. The resolution calls on all countries to cooperate in the effort to find the participants, organizers, and supporters of the brutal actions and to bring them to trial.

Such efforts need to incorporate a far-reaching perspective of increasing international cooperation based on law and justice, in which religious or national conflicts are not instigated so that the grounds for terrorism will disappear.

As the UNSC has confirmed many times, every country must abide by the U.N. Charter and international law. Every country is urged to conclude a comprehensive terror prevention agreement and to set up an international mechanism serving this purpose. Actions and steps to eliminate international terrorism must be lawful and rational. -- Akahata July 9, 2005
