JCP wins in Kurashiki

A Japanese Communist Party candidate won a local assembly seat in the western Japanese city of Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture by defeating a Democratic Party candidate and two independent contenders.

The voting took place on September 4 to elect three additional members of the Kurashiki City Assembly following the merger of the city with two small towns, Funao Town and Makibi Town.

In the Funao constituency, JCP candidate Taigi Kimio received 31.9 percent of the vote, 5.8 times the vote a JCP candidate received in the 2004 House of Councilors election in the same district.

Tagi for 30 years has worked as a town assembly member in the old Funao Town and earned the trust of many residents by reducing the amount of the national health insurance premiums and introducing a town bus service for residents. -- Akahata, September 5 & 6, 2005
