Ruling parties propose setting up standing committee on Constitution

At the September 14 meeting of the council of parties in the House of Representatives, the ruling Liberal Democratic and Komei parties expressed their intention to set up a standing committee on the Constitution in the Diet.

Council Chair Kawasaki Jiro told the press later in the day that the ruling parties are planning to submit to the extraordinary Diet session starting on September 21 a bill to revise the Diet Law to establish the standing committee on the Constitution and to get the bill passed through the Lower House as soon as possible.

The Constitution Research Council in both houses did not have the right to submit or deliberate on bills.

During the last Diet session, the LDP, Komei, and the Democratic Party of Japan agreed on allowing the Constitution Research Council to discuss a national referendum on necessary procedures for constitutional revision. -- Akahata, September 15, 2005
