Gensuikyo to send a delegation to U.N.

The Japan Council against A & H Bombs (Japan Gensuikyo) will send its delegation to New York in October to press the United Nations to do its utmost for a total ban on nuclear weapons.

This is part of the action plan adopted by the Japan Gensuikyo Executive Board on September 21 to implement the decision of the 2005 World Conference against A & H Bombs.

The action plan also includes: a campaign to collect signatures calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons during the U.N. Disarmament Week; publicizing A-bomb exhibitions across the nation; and an activity to demand that the government play a leading role for the abolition of nuclear weapons by calling on the United Nations to hold a special conference devoted to a total ban on nuclear weapons.

The action plan also calls for the success of a rally (October 18-19) held by the Japan Confederation of A & H Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo) to mark the 60th anniversary of the A-bombings as well as more activities to listen to and pass down A-bomb survivors' (Hibakusha) testimonies.

Explaining the action plan, Japan Gensuikyo Secretary General Taka Hiroshi stressed that the 50 years of struggle by Japan's anti-nuclear weapons movement has made the abolition of nuclear weapons an international majority demand. He also said that a mounting international criticism against the arrogance of the U.S. Bush administration as well as the positive outcome of the fourth round of the Six-Party Talks underline the accuracy of the direction set forth by the 2005 World Conference against A & H Bombs. -- Akahata, September 21, 2005
