JCP delivers donation for Pakistani quake victims

The Japanese Communist Party donated 8.33 million yen to Pakistan for the relief of victims of the earthquake that hit northern Pakistan.

JCP Executive Committee Chair Shii Kazuo visited Pakistan's Ambassador Kamran Niaz at his official residence on October 1.

Handing the statement of donation to the ambassador, Shii said, "This is the money JCP members have collected in the streets of Japan for Pakistani quake victims."

He also said that the JCP has demanded that the Japanese government make every effort to provide relief to the victims of northern Pakistan."

Thanking Shii for the donation, Ambassador Niaz said that it is feared that the death toll may reach 100,000. He said that what the victims in the mountain areas need most are blankets, sleeping bags and tents.

The ambassador said that with 70 percent of the houses destroyed in the disaster areas affecting 3.5 million people, international assistance, both governmental and non-governmental, is urgently needed because it will begin to snow in about two weeks. -- Akahata, October 2, 2005
