Shinfujin holds its 22nd congress

The New Japan Women's Association Shinfujin held its 22nd National Congress November 5-6 in Tokyo with about 1,000 delegates attending.

Delegates spoke about various grassroots activities they have been carrying out since the last national congress two years ago to defend the peace Constitution and living conditions.

Speaking on behalf of the Japanese Communist Party, Secretariat Head Ichida Tadayoshi commended Shinfujin for its efforts to realize women's common demands, including the movement opposing the strengthening of the function of U.S. bases in Okinawa, the movement for free infant medical care, and for a maximum class size of 30 students. "Shinfujin is an indispensable organization giving many women the courage to fight for their rights," he said.

The National Congress adopted a special resolution calling for women's cooperation in the effort to defend Japan's Constitution.

Shinfujin was founded in 1962 and is a registered with the U.N. as an NGO. With a membership of about 200,000, it is Japan's largest women's organization. -- Akahata, November 6, 7, 2005
