Symposium held to demand Toyota's social responsibility

On November 27, about 100 workers and residents participated in the 22nd symposium to discuss Toyota Motor's social responsibility in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, where Toyota's headquarters is located.

The organizing committee of Toyota workers' annual mass campaign organized the event.

Chukyo University Professor Saruta Masaki stated that Toyota workers all over the world are beginning to protest the company's union bashing tactics and its coercive practices to force workers to follow its standards in the "kaizen" production method. He stressed that it is increasingly important for Japanese workers to send abroad information regarding their struggles in order to develop Toyota workers' international solidarity.

A Toyota-affiliated company employee reported that after working 80 hours overtime a month, he is suffering from ill health and is now seeking compensation under the Workers' Accident Compensation Insurance.

Ito Keiichi, representing the National Confederation of Trade Unions, proposed the establishment of a campaign to demand Toyota's corporate social responsibility.
