JCP, CPC delegations hold theoretical discussion on socialism and capitalism

A Japanese Communist Party delegation led by JCP Central Committee Chair Tetsuzo Fuwa and a Communist Party of China delegation led by Zhang Ximing, the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee deputy director-general, held talks on December 6-9 at the JCP head office, focusing on theoretical questions.

The CPC delegation was composed of members of the CPC project of Marxist theoretical research and building. In explaining why the CPC is strengthening the study of Marxism, Zhang Ximing said that China's recent economic and social achievement of socialism through a market economy is often seen as capitalistic and that it has become necessary to buttress its Marxist theories.

In the talks, Fuwa spoke on the following topics: (1) how to view the contemporary world, including the socialist movement in the globalized world, and the essence and main features of contemporary capitalism as well as its capability to adjust itself; (2) the socialist movement and the historical evaluation and contemporary significance of Marxism, including the experiences and lessons of the socialist movement in the 20th century; (3) how socialism should be viewed in the contemporary world, including socialism in the new era and political and economic forms of a socialist society in future, as well as socialism with Chinese characteristics; (4) Questions about the Japanese situation, social structure, particularly, an analysis of the present state of the working class in Japan and relations between the JCP and other political parties.

At the luncheon after the talks, Zhang Ximing stressed how important and fruitful the discussion was and called for promoting mutual understanding and development by working out a mechanism of theoretical exchange on a day-to-day basis between the two parties. He thanked Fuwa for his theoretical study of socialism and his contribution to the talks.

Fuwa said that discussions were so comprehensive and detailed that they represented the first such theoretical exchange of the JCP with another communist party. He said, "Theoretical work is a long-term undertaking. Let us not be satisfied with this first step and continue our discussions."

After the talks in Tokyo, the CPC delegation on December 9 and 10 visited Kyoto. They had talks with JCP branch members at a major manufacturer of advanced imaging systems and equipment for use in medical diagnosis and treatment (Shimadzu Corporation) and visited Ritsumeikan University's Kyoto Museum for Peace.

The CPC delegation left Osaka for Beijing on December 11. The delegation was seen off by Yamaguchi Tomio, JCP Executive Committee member, at the Kansai International Airport.
