New anti-nuclear signature campaign starts

The Japan Council against A & H Bombs (Japan Gensuikyo) has started the new signature campaign "For Swift Abolition of Nuclear Weapons" that it launched on January 1.

On January 1 and 2, members of Tokyo Gensuikyo took to the streets near temples and shrines in various parts of Tokyo and called on the people visiting there to make wishes for the new year to sign the petition for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

They also collected signatures in support of atomic bomb survivors (Hibakusha) fighting in courts to get their diseases officially recognized as A-bomb related.

In Mitaka City, Japanese Communist Party House of Representatives member Kasai Akira and JCP Mitaka City Assembly members took part in the local signature collecting drive.

On January 6, about 50 members of 17 organizations including Japan Gensuikyo, the New Japan Women's Association, and the Japan Peace Committee, carried out this year's first monthly action in front of Tokyo's Ueno Station. They collected 178 signatures in an hour.

Japan Gensuikyo holds a monthly action on the 6th and 9th day of every month calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons, the days on which the U.S. bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
