SDP stance changed on SDF issue: Shii

In its final draft of the declaration, which will be adopted at its congress on February 11 and 12, the Social Democratic Party defined the Self-Defense Forces as "unconstitutional."

Commenting on this at a press conference on February 2, Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo stated, "The SDP is going to define that the SDF is 'contrary to the Constitution' and that the SDP aims to establish a 'unarmed Japan.' This is a major policy change."

Concerning the JCP proposal for a joint JCP-SDP struggle on the constitutional issue, Shii answered, "We're waiting for a response from the SDP. Given the importance of the matter, it is understandable that the SDP may need more time to consider our proposal."
