1,000 people call for opposition to U.S. F-15 training

In Ogawa town in Ibaraki Prefecture, more than 1,000 people participated in a prefecture-wide rally to oppose the plan to allow U.S. F-15 fighter jets to be deployed for training at the Air Self-Defense Force Hyakuri Base.

The rally was sponsored by an organizing committee comprised of trade unions and peace organizations.

Handa Shigeru, a Tokyo Shimbun reporter was the main speaker. He said, "The U.S. military realignment is aimed at strengthening the functions of bases and establishing a framework for incorporating the Japanese Self-Defense Forces into U.S. forces and dispatching them abroad."

Date Goemon, the secretary of the local Peace Committee, emphasized that this meeting was being held in solidarity with the many struggles nationwide against U.S. military bases."
