Local assembly opposes U.S. F-15 exercises at SDF base

The Hokota City Assembly in Ibaraki Prefecture on March 9 adopted a resolution in opposition to the planned relocation of U.S. F-15 fighter exercises to the Air Self-Defense Force Hyakuri Base.

Hokota City is located in the electoral constituency of Defense Agency Director General Nukaga Fukushiro.

Stressing that the city is situated next to Ogawa Town that hosts the Hyakuri Base and that the airspace for exercises of fighter jets stationed in the base covers the city, the resolution expressed concerns about possible noise pollution from the U.S. aircraft as well as accidents and crimes involving U.S. military personnel.

It also pointed out that the relocation will further strengthen the integration between the U.S. forces and the SDF.

The resolution will be submitted to the House of Representatives speaker, the House of Councilors president, Prime Minister Koizumi Jun'ichiro, and Defense Agency Director General Nukaga Fukushiro.- - Akahata, March 11, 2006
