Kagoshima citizens' council formed against U.S. aircraft relocation

In Kagoshima Prefecture where no U.S. military base has ever been established, a citizens' council was formed on March 25 in opposition to the plan to transfer U.S. refueling aircraft from Okinawa to the Air Self-Defense Force Kanoya base.

In its first meeting, 60 representatives from various citizens' organizations including trade unions, farmers' groups, and women' groups decided to carry out a campaign to collect signatures calling for the withdrawal of the relocation plan in solidarity with Kanoya City Mayor Yamashita Sakae who has expressed his opposition to the plan.

The U.S. forces also seek to use the base for P3 patrol aircraft operations.
