New U.S. base will be 140 percent larger than initial plan

A new U.S. base with two V-shaped runways the Japanese and U.S. governments plan to construct on the shoreline of U.S. Camp Schwab in Okinawa to replace the U.S. Marine Corps Futenma Air Station will have an area of 180 hectares in total.

The revelation came on May 12 in a Defense Agency's explanation to Japanese Communist Party House of Representatives member Akamine Seiken.

The area will be 140 percent larger than the initial plan submitted last October. 140 hectares or about 80 percent of the total area will be on reclaimed land.

The reclaimed area will destroy seaweed beds that feed dugongs, a national natural treasure. The project to reclaim the sea on a large scale will only help destroy the rich ecosystem.
