Local assembly adopts resolution against deployment of U.S. Patriot missiles to Okinawa

The Kadena Town Assembly in Okinawa Prefecture on June 30 adopted unanimously a resolution calling for a withdrawal of the planned deployment of the surface-to-air guided Patriot missiles to the U.S. Kadena Air base.

The resolution criticized the deployment plan for forcing local residents to bear heavier base burdens as well as for further strengthening the Kadena base by turning it into a "fortress". It stated, "Town residents reject more base burdens."

The U.S. government reportedly informed the Japanese government of the plan to deploy 24 Patriot missiles to the Kadena base in their talks on the realignment of the U.S. forces in Japan.
