Government appeals court decisions that met tunnel workers' claim

The government on July 19 lodged an appeal against the decisions of the Tokyo and Kumamoto district courts that recognized state responsibility for failing to protect tunnel construction workers from lung disease.

Plaintiffs and their lawyers on the same day held a press conference in which Lawyer Onodera Toshitaka pointed out that many of the plaintiffs will die before a final ruling will be made if the government keeps appealing the case to higher courts. He strongly condemned the state decision by saying, "It is like the government telling the plaintiffs, 'This case won't be resolved in your lifetime'."
