Government appeals Hibakusha case to higher court

The Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare on August 11 appealed against the Hiroshima District Court ruling acknowledging that 41 plaintiffs' medical problems are caused by A-bomb radiation.

In front of the ministry building on the same day, with a banner reading, "Are you waiting for Hibakusha to die out?" about 100 Hibakusha, lawyers, supporters, and concerned citizens conducted a protest rally demanding that the ministry withdraw the appeal.

Six organizations, including the Hiroshima Plaintiffs' Council, issued a statement in protest against the appeal filed by the ministry. Ministry officials have refused to meet with the plaintiffs.

The Hiroshima District Court on August 4 ruled that the A-bomb had caused all 41 plaintiffs' ill health, and that the government must correct faults in its recognition standards.
