Consumers call for cut in consumption tax on daily goods

The Liaison Council of Various Circles to End the Consumption Tax and the National Association to End the Consumption Tax organized a nationwide concerted action on December 24.

The action has taken place annually on this day since the Consumption Tax Act was forcibly enacted on December 24 in 1988.

The Hatoyama Cabinet is planning to impose heavier burdens on people by such means as reducing tax deductions for dependents.

Handing out packets of free pocket tissues to passers-by, action participants in Tokyo called for a cut in the consumption tax rate on food and other daily goods.

A 56-year-old woman stressed the need to ease the burden on parents when their children are of school age and said, gI want the system of tax deduction for dependents to continue and the consumption tax rate to be reduced for food and daily necessities.h

A 70-year-old woman on welfare said, gI thought the Democratic Party would be a little bit better than the Liberal Democratic Party, but it has turned out to be the same. The additional benefit for the elderly in the livelihood protection program is still abolished. I canft live without the benefit.h
