44 firms emit half of greenhouse gases in Japan

An analysis published by an environmental NGO on March 25 shows that half the greenhouse gas emissions in FY 2007 in Japan came from just 44 corporations, mainly from power and steel companies.

The amount of greenhouse gases emitted in Japan in 2007 was about 1,374 million tons in total, up 9.3 percent from the 1990 level.

According to the Kiko Network, these 44 companies increased their total amount of emissions by nine percent from the previous year, revealing that the government measures depending on a business voluntary effort are incapable of cutting carbon emissions.

Asaoka Mie of the Kiko Network said, gThe corporation creating the largest amount of greenhouse gases emits almost the same amount as discharged from two thirds of all business entities in Japan.h

The top ten emitters were: Tokyo Electric Power Company, Nippon Steel Corporation, JFE Steel Corporation, Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc., Electric Power Development Company, Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc., The Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc., The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc., Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd., and Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc.
