Environmental NGO calls for cancellation of Henoko reclamation

The Nature Conservation Society of Japan (NACS-J) has urged the Japanese government to cancel the reclamation of the coast of Henoko and Oura Bay in Okinawa in order to preserve the ecosystem. The area has been designated by the Japanese and U.S. governments as the site for the construction of a new U.S. military base.

This was expressed in an eight-point recommendation to the government which NACS-J compiled in preparation for the tenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 10) which will begin on October 18 in Nagoya City.

The recommendation demands that the government cancel the planned destruction of the coastal area, describing it as totally inappropriate as the host of COP10, and that the government consider designating the area as a natural conservation site.

It also stressed the governmentfs responsibility to lead international efforts to implement a post-2010 target which will be adopted at COP10.
