Ex-teacher urges Tokyo government to maintain evening courses at 4 public high schools

November 9, 2016
Citizens calling for the continuation of night school classes on November 7 petitioned the Tokyo Metropolitan government to withdraw its plan to close evening classes at four public senior high schools.

Japanese Communist Party member of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly Ueki Koji joined in the petitioning.

In a meeting with a Tokyo government official, Nagano Yukio, who used to teach students with disabilities, said, “In addition to working students, people from various backgrounds, such as foreign residents in Japan and adults who only completed primary education are attending night classes. It is unacceptable for the Tokyo government to trample on these people’s earnest desire to ‘go to school’. The government should maintain evening courses in the four metropolitan high schools and increase the number of night schools.”

Sawai Rumi who is working for better education services including night courses, said, “70% of nighttime junior high school graduates continue learning at nighttime senior high schools. The number of those schools has already decreased. The closure of evening courses in the four schools in question will further worsen the situation surrounding night school students. I want the Tokyo governor to observe the efficacy of night classes and cancel the closure plan.”
