2011 March 23 - 29 [GREAT EAST JAPAN DISASTER]

Shii visits evacuation centers around Tokyo

March 27, 2011
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on March 26 met with Great East Japan Disaster evacuees at three evacuation centers in Tokyo, Saitama, and Kanagawa prefectures.

Shii visited Saitama Super Arena where about 1,200 Futaba town residents and the town’s administrative headquarters were evacuated. Futaba Town is where the Fukushima No.1 Nuclear Power Plant in Fukushima Prefecture is located.

Handing over donations collected by the JCP to Futaba Town Mayor Idogawa Katsutaka, Shii said “The JCP will make efforts to help relive the disaster victims and rebuild the disaster-stricken areas irrespective of political affiliations. We will have these efforts reflected in the government’s response to the disaster.”

Mayor Idogawa said, “The Saitama Prefectural and the Saitama City governments are helping us very much. However, we still have very limited information. I want a listing of the various public support programs available for the disaster victims.”

Shii replied that he will convey Idogawa’s request to the central government and also have a relevant JCP organization deliver to Idogawa the JCP brochure introducing public support programs. Shii went on to say, “I understand that Futaba citizens are experiencing terrible hardships caused by the devastating earthquake and tsunami as well as the nuclear power plant accidents. I will call on the state and Tokyo Electric Power Co. to be responsible in giving full support and financial compensation to the town residents in order to reconstruct their lives.”

After visiting the arena, Shii visited Shiba Hirokazu, assistant to the prime minister, to urge the government to provide to disaster-hit municipalities up-to-date information regarding available government support for the disaster victims.

Later on the same day, Shii went to evacuation centers established at Ajinomoto Stadium (Chohu City, Tokyo) and Todoroki Arena (Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture) to make note of evacuees’ demands.
