2011 April 27 - May 10 TOP3 [NUCLEAR CRISIS]

‘Eco-friendly’ politicians and TEPCO political donations

May 8, 2011
“Electric power symbolizes what a state is all about, you know. At decision-making meetings of Nippon Keidanren chair and vice-chairs, everyone follows the lead of the TEPCO official and does what TEPCO wants done,” said a person associated with the Japan Business Federation (Nippon Keidanren).

The electrical energy industry always maneuvers to penetrate the political arena by lavishing donations dubbed “nuclear power plant money”.

According to the 1994 fund report of the Global Legislators Organization for a Balanced Environment (GLOBE) Japan, it received two million yen in donations from TEPCO, accounting for one third of its net revenue for that year.

The GLOBE is an international parliamentarians’ league established in 1989 by U.S., European, and Japanese lawmakers for the purpose of promoting cooperation in fighting global warming and other environmental problems. GLOBE Japan at that time consisted of Liberal Democratic Party, Socialist Party of Japan (dissolved), Democratic Socialist Party (dissolved), and Komei Party Dietmembers, including former Prime Minister Hashimoto Ryutaro, former Minister of Education Kosugi Takashi, and former Minister of Environment Hironaka Wakako.

TEPCO has made numerous donations to the GLOBE Japan since its founding. A person related to this organization told Akahata that they receive money ranging from a few million yen to 20 million yen through the Nippon Keidanren, and that the money comes from not only TEPCO but the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan (FEPC) each time the GLOBE Japan holds an event such as an international forum and pays for travel expenses.

The then secretary of the GLOBE Japan said, “I suppose TEPCO and FEPC give us donations with the expectation of Dietmembers’ support in the promotion of nuclear power generation.”

In short, the “eco-conscious” politicians work for the world environment using “the nuclear power plant money”.

As of August 2010, the GLOBE Japan is made up of 47 Dietmembers of both chambers from the LDP, the Democratic Party of Japan, the Komei, the Your Party, and the Social Democratic Party.
